Vaginal mesh care centre to be operational in NI by March 2019

A centre to treat women in Northern Ireland suffering as a result of vaginal mesh implants is to be fully operational by March 2019 according to the Permanent Health Secretary Richard Pengelly.

While the news is very positive many have voiced concern at the delay in getting urgent care to women in Northern Ireland, many of whom describe suffering excruciating pain as a result of the mesh implants. The support group ‘Sling the Mesh NI’ say that many women have chosen to travel to England for mesh removal surgery, following a breakdown of trust with local clinicians. Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithi Flynn described the slow progress on the care centre as slow and frustrating, but said it was a positive that funding had been approved for the centre to open in March.

A review of the use of the mesh implants is underway and there is a temporary ban in place until the report is concluded. A specially accredited unit had been set up to treat women suffering problems as a result of receiving the mesh implants, and at least four women underwent surgery to have the mesh removed.

Approximately 7,000 women had vaginal mesh implants but it is not yet known how many suffered adverse effects as a result.
