877 employee redundancies confirmed by JTI Gallaher
It has been confirmed that 877 employees of the Northern Ireland plant of JTI Gallaher will be made redundant when the factory closes in 2017.
Employees were told about the future closure of the factory on Tuesday of this week, and were today given time off to process the redundancy news. The JTI Gallaher factory in Ballymena is the last remaining tobacco factory in the UK, and is estimated to pay approximately £60million in wages each year. The closure of the plant will have an obvious impact on the employees being made redundant, and will also have an effect on the local economy, such is the size of the workforce from the local community.
