Over-50s divorces increasing demand for rental property

By Lenore Rice

The number of people over the age of 50 who are renting a property has increased significantly in the last 5 years, according to new research.

Over a third of people aged 50 and over in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK live in a rental property, and the rising divorce rate of over-50s is considered to be one of the main reasons for the change. Many of the so-called 'silver splitters' are facing the same affordability problems as first time buyers and home movers, unable to get a foot on the property ladder after selling the family home they lived in before their divorce.
