Speed enforcement week begins in Northern Ireland

By Neil Logan

Northern Ireland motorists might notice an increased police presence on roads and motorways this week, as a result of the European speed enforcement week.

The operation is being supported by the Northern Ireland police service, and will involve officers using different speed detection methods on different kinds of roads across the province. During the same campaign last year 554,000 motorists from 25 countries were caught speeding.

The campaign is run by Tispol, the organisation set up by the traffic police forces in Europe, and president Koen Ricour urged "all drivers to challenge their own attitude to speeding", which he says is not a "trivial offence".
