5 things to consider when making a Will

By Lenore Rice

A high percentage of adults in Northern Ireland consider making a Will but fail to carry through to writing one, largely because it is difficult to contemplate a time when you are not around, and make arrangements for it. To help structure your thinking for writing a Will, here are 5 things you may wish to consider:

  1. Executors and Trustees - Who will you appoint to deal with your affairs and implement your Will.
  2. Children under 16 - Who would you appoint as guardians for your children if something happens to you and your partner.
  3. Specific gifts - Would you like to pass on specific items or amounts of money to named people?
  4. The Residuary Estate - Consider who the rest of your estate should be divided out.
  5. After the Will is written - Consider where the Will is going to be stored and review it every 3 to 5 years, or upon a significant change in your circumstances.
