Solicitors in Northern Ireland may be affected by Mills-McCartney divorce

The divorce settlement between Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills could set a legal precedent that would affect solicitors in Northern Ireland.

Ms Mills was awarded £23.4 million in the settlement.

Predictions of what the final amount would be varied wildly, from 25 million to up to 200 million.

The couple married six years ago and have a four year old daughter called Beatrice.

Family and divorce lawyer Vanessa Lloyd Platt commented to Sky News that the length of the marriage and the large value of Sir McCartney's fortune mean that the decision could set a legal precedent for the short marriages of the super-wealthy which would affect solicitors in Northern Ireland and across the UK.

Solicitor Paul Barrow told the Liverpool Daily Post that it is a fair settlement that reflects the length of the marriage and the fact the couple have a child together.

When they announced their divorce the pair blamed media intrusion for the split.

Ms Mills had been branded a "gold-digger" by the press.
