Investigations into NI savers' tax affairs double

Savers in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK are now being targeted as HMRC tax investigations double. This has raised concerns that innocent mistakes on self-assessment tax returns may be punished and that those people who have made simple mistakes such as including an incorrect amount of Bank interest are considered to be easy targets for HMRC.

HMRC are attempting to minimise the estimated £35 billion of tax lost every year by increasing investigations and have recruited additional staff to work specifically in this area.

Tax experts have warned that middle-class professionals, such as doctors, lawyers and teachers, were being targeted as they were more likely to settle any claims without dispute because they felt “anxious” when HMRC sent warning letters.

It has also been suggested that HMRC had been “given a mandate to aggressively go about trying to collect tax” and accused it of “nit-picking”.
