Over 100 drivers caught going over 100mph in 2018

New figures, published by the road safety charity Brake under a Freedom of Information request, have revealed that 109 drivers were caught by police in Northern Ireland driving over 100mph in 2018.

This total represents an increase of 26% on the previous year in Northern Ireland, from 86 motorists caught, with a 52% increase being reported across the rest of the UK where 9,596 motorists were caught.

The highest speed recorded by the PSNI was 140mph, on the M2 in Belfast, while the highest recorded in the rest of the UK was 162mph on the M1 Southbound in South Yorkshire, and the M4 Eastbound inn Avon and Somerset.

While drivers caught at speeds exceeding 100mph are referred to court where magistrates have the discretion to issue a driving ban or apply penalty points, Brake have called for an automatic driving ban to be implemented on drivers caught speeding at more the 100mph.
