Accident at work injuries in Northern Ireland up by 27 per cent
Serious injuries in workplace accidents across Northern Ireland increased by over a quarter in 2018 according to the most recent Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) Annual Report.
The report stated that, while fatalities as a result of accidents at work are down 31% to 11 deaths, all reportable injuries in the workplace have risen by 13% to 1,898.
The HSENI gathered their research in conjunction with local councils, as well as by conducting over 6,000 workplace inspections and serving formal notices of enforcement in order to combat poor practice. Slips and trips are the most common cause of major workplace injuries in Northern Ireland, making up over a third of all reported major injuries.
In terms of areas of particular concern, the HSENI highlighted that farming and agriculture have significant work to do to improve work safety, but reiterated that it will continue its collaborative work with the Farm Safety Partnership in order to provide information, advice, and support to agricultural workers.
The HSENI emphasised that, “no matter what sector people work in, everyone has the right to come home safe and well after a day’s work.”
