Deadline set for PSNI Holiday Pay Decision Appeal

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has until the end of the week to decide whether it will appeal the much-covered decision on holiday pay made by the Court of Appeal some weeks ago.

Speaking at last week’s Policing Board meeting Sir George Hamilton, the outgoing Chief Constable, said that the repercussions of the decision could be “massive”.

He went on to state that, while acknowledging that holiday pay is a legal right, the PSNI still had some concerns regarding the retrospective nature of the payments over the 20 year timeframe.

The case has received a great deal of attention from the media and, with the PSNI looking at a bill approaching £40m, the story may be in the news for some time yet.

Sir Hamilton retired on Friday just passed, and so the matter of resolving the holiday pay dispute will fall to his successor. The incoming Chief Constable, Simon Byrne, is sure to have eventful first week on the job.
