What’s it like being a trainee solicitor at Wilson Nesbitt?

We’re proud to support people on their career journey; many of our trainees have progressed their careers with us to associate and even partner level.

Here, we speak to Conor Wilson, who first joined us as a paralegal and is currently a trainee solicitor. Conor shares his experience of working at Wilson Nesbitt, including his proudest moment after he recently took a case to the Supreme Court in London with our Partner Daren Johnston.

Why did you choose a career in law?

As a career, law is broad enough to accommodate a range of different skills and personalities. I enjoy how it’s live and ever developing, that it has a set career path and route to qualification which isn’t always clear in other industries. Fundamentally, I chose it because of the impact you are able to have on people’s lives, I have a genuine interest in the work I do which certainly helps.

What was your time like at the Institute of Professional Services?

I had a great time at the Institute. The course provides training in areas of law that I otherwise would not have been exposed to. There’s also a social element to the course, which I really enjoyed.

Why did you choose Wilson Nesbitt?

I chose Wilson Nesbitt because it is an established and respected firm with a history of taking on trainees and giving them practical, hands-on experience. I had previously worked in the firm as a paralegal and had built strong relationships in the office, so I knew I would enjoy working with those around me.

What have you found most beneficial about Wilson Nesbitt?

Wilson Nesbitt grants you opportunity and responsibility from the outset. For me, this has translated into litigation file handling and considerable court experience across a range of subject matters. I’ve been able to work with a strong support system of accomplished lawyers who are always willing to help, but will also encourage and motivate you to come to your own conclusions.

What’s been your proudest moment?

My proudest moment came at the beginning of June when I travelled to London alongside Daren Johnston to represent our client in a case before the Supreme Court, which was a first for the firm. I had attended and worked on the case at two lower court tiers before it reached the Supreme Court during my training contract and as a paralegal, so I was immensely privileged and proud to play a role in a historic case. Not many solicitors would ever get that opportunity and I was fortunate enough to experience it during my traineeship, which I’ll remain extremely grateful for.
