Why is it important that your solicitor is on the panel for all major mortgage lenders?

When you purchase a property with a mortgage, the solicitor you choose will act for you and for your mortgage lender. The mortgage lender will require your solicitor to be on their panel of pre-approved solicitors. If the solicitor you choose is not on their panel they will need another firm to be instructed to act for them and you will be responsible for the costs of this second solicitor. It is therefore more expensive and can over-complicate the process as you have another person in the process.

If you know which mortgage lender you are going to purchase with, you can ask the solicitors you are approaching if they are on the pre-approved panel. But a better question is to ask if the solicitors are on all the major mortgage lender panels, as you may for some reason decide to change your mortgage lender and will be dealing with a different panel list. Wilson Nesbitt is on the approved panel of all the major UK mortgage lenders so we will be able to continue acting for you, even if you are advised to change your mortgage to a different lender after the purchase process has started.
